— Mustangs Welcome Men’s Soccer Coach
With World Cup action in full swing, University of the Southwest had soccer news of its own on Tuesday. The Mustang Athletic Department is excited to announce the hiring of Head Men’s Soccer Coach Robert Ssejjemba.
A native of Uganda, Ssejjemba joins the Mustang Athletic Staff after spending the past 5 years as the Head Men’s Soccer Coach at Virginia Intermont, an NAIA Division I institution and member of the Appalachian Athletic Conference. In 2008, Ssejjemba helped resurrect the Cobra soccer team and built the program from the ground up. Under his guidance, the Cobras finished Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament Runners Up in 2012 and 2013.
As a student-athlete with the Virginia Intermont soccer team, Ssejjemba was named an NAIA All-American and helped lead the Cobras to national tournament appearances in 2000 and 2003. Along with his collegiate playing career, Ssejjemba has competed at some of the highest levels on the pitch. From 1999 to 2006 he was part of the Uganda National Team and competed in the 2006 World Cup Qualifying matches. In 2006 he was part of DC United, a Major League Soccer (MLS) club in Washington, DC. He also spent 3 years in the USL PRO league where he earned a league MVP while becoming the league Scoring Champion, and Goal Scoring Champion, all in the same season, in which he led his team to the USL
“I am pleased to announce the naming of Robert Ssejjemba as the new Head Men’s Soccer Coach at the University of the Southwest,” stated Vice President of Advancement and Director of Athletics William Weidner. “Robert brings a demonstrated track record of success in the intercollegiate athletics soccer coaching profession as a proven Head Coach as well as having excelled as a soccer athlete on the collegiate, international and professional levels.”
His background in the sport of soccer speaks volumes for his coaching career and experience. “As a student-athlete on the collegiate level, Robert attained All-American status while becoming one of the most decorated soccer student-athletes in his University soccer program’s history,” said Weidner. “His experience on the international stage includes having represented his country in World Cup competition. As a professional soccer player, Robert has played at the highest level in the United States, having competed with the Major League Soccer (MLS) organization.”
Ssejjemba is ready to hit the ground running and excited for the opportunity. “I am excited and very grateful for the opportunity to lead the Men’s Soccer program here at the University of the Southwest,” said the new coach. “I would like to thank the AD, Mr. Weidner for the confidence he had in me from the very beginning. The most important step now is to become familiar with the returning players and assess our recruiting needs as we start the process of building something special. I look forward to working with a promising group of players. Together we can accomplish so much on and off the field.”
“As an experienced and proven Head Men’s Soccer Coach at the intercollegiate level, Robert has demonstrated his ability as a program builder in which his soccer student-athletes have excelled in both the academic and athletic arenas while competing for conference championships,” stated Weidner. “His commitment to student-athlete success in the classroom and on the field of play will be a great fit with our athletic department core values as well as our University Mission Statement in this regard.”
“He and his wife Katie, along with their three children, Teddy, Isaiah, and Mercy, will be a wonderful addition to our athletic department, the University and the Hobbs community. On behalf of our USW Athletic Department and the University of the Southwest, we welcome Robert Ssejjemba as the newest member of our Mustang Family.”
